Loss of Another Great Friend

It's with great sadness that I post the loss of Wendal Jones, founder of the Jones Double Reed Company, bassoonist and good friend of the IDRS.

Wendal Jones, bassoonist[ ]The double reed world has lost another of its luminary members, Dr. Wendal Jones, bassoonist, composer, conductor, teacher, inventor and all-around wonderful musician. I had the privilege of performing with Wendal and his lovely wife Virginia for almost four decades in hundreds of symphony, octet, quintet and “oboe band” concerts. In addition to founding Jones Double Reed Products and inventing machines still in use by that company, he was Chair of the Eastern Washington University Music Department, conducted the orchestra there for years, received national recognition for his commissioned compositions, played 1st bassoon in the Spokane Symphony next to Virginia (1st Clarinet) for forty years, and taught bassoonists who hold down major positions in orchestras throughout the world. His presence will be sorely missed in the double reed community. He is survived by sons Steve and Greg and their families. A memorial service is tentatively planned for mid-June in Spokane, WA. The 35th Annual Royal Fireworks Concert will be dedicated to his memory on July 28th in Spokane. Further details and information will be forthcoming from the family. David Dutton
