This instrument has been played on for approximately four years and is in good condition. The top joint cracked once around the trill keys a few years ago, was repaired by Carlos Coelho (from whom I bought it), and hasn't cracked since. I have not played on it for a few months, so it would require a break-in period. Also, I have exchanged the original thumb rest for an adjustable thumb rest. If interested, we can negotiate a trial period. For the price, I am willing to negotiate as well, though I would like to stay in the $6200-6400 range. Email at mkswc2@mail.umkc.edu or call (573) 690-6248.

Liz Ryan: 7 reasons to let your kid study music

"Here's my issue," says a mom on the phone. "My high-school senior son is good at many things, but he wants to major in music performance. Is it smart to let a kid major in music? Seems like a tough row to hoe."

"Not in the slightest," I said. "Your son might become a full-time performer, or do a million other musical things. He might write music, or conduct or arrange it or book tours or teach. If the kid wants to major in music, I'd say, 'Heck, yes! Do it!'"

"But will he be able to find a job in the music business?" the mom asked me.

"Your son won't find one long-term music job, most likely," I replied. "He'll put various things together and figure out his path, the way all musicians do. He'll use his excellent dot-connecting skills, the ones every one of our kids -- and every one of us grownups, too -- should be cultivating anyway. "

Here are seven reasons for a parent to encourage a musical kid to major in music:...[continued, Daily Camera]

http://www.dailycamera.com/business-col … camera.com

R. Walter bassoons; seeking information.

I'm seeking any information I can about bassoons from the maker Rudolf Walter. Apart from their website, I have no frame of reference for their quality, their characteristic tone, or their price range. I've been looking around for a new instrument for some time and after looking at Fox after Fox, I've been checking out other makers, just for variety. I'm intrigued by their accolades and by some of the top notch players that endorse them (either as a player of the horns or not), including my own bassoon hero, Sergio Azzolini. Is there a US agent for Walter? Does anybody out there have positive and negative reviews? Does anyone know of one for sale? Thanks, folks.

Phil
NYC

Hello everyone,
I invite you to download a sample of my method for teaching beginning bassoonists attached to this post.
You can order a copy here.

bsnMethod is one of the few methods devoted to the beginner. It combines a modern pedagogical philosophy with sound instructional materials taken from the canon of great Western musical works, in a beginning method for bassoon or tenoroon. I'm thrilled at the progress my beginners are making- I hope you find it as useful as I have!
Adam

Hi all,

I've been using a HDR micrometer (the Ferrillo design) for the past year. Yesterday I noticed that the needle no longer points to 0 but is now resting around 15/20. Has anyone had this happen to theirs? I've never knocked it over or dropped it, so I'm not sure what could be the cause of this. I've cleaned it as best I could to make sure there was no cane stuck anywhere. Any thoughts/comments are much appreciated!
