Hello - I am posting this on behalf of a friend on the faculty at the Maine Chamber Music Seminar. There are still two spots open for bassoonists, and partial scholarships are available. For all inquiries please go to their website and contact the director of the program. Thank you.

The Maine Chamber Music Seminar [June 17 - 23] is seeking college/conservatory and graduate level musicians.
There are still openings for this 2012 inaugural season.
STRINGS/PIANO/WINDS (fl/ob/cl/bsn/hrn)
PRE-FORMED ENSEMBLES are highly encouraged to apply and will be eligible for partial scholarship.
Deadline for applications is MAY 1st* (extended, until spaces are filled)

*At this late date, the audition requirements can be made flexible if the groups/individuals come strongly recommended.

(There is still some limited scholarship available).

This instrument has been played on for approximately four years and is in good condition. The top joint cracked once around the trill keys a few years ago, was repaired by Carlos Coelho (from whom I bought it), and hasn't cracked since. I have not played on it for a few months, so it would require a break-in period. Also, I have exchanged the original thumb rest for an adjustable thumb rest. If interested, we can negotiate a trial period. For the price, I am willing to negotiate as well, though I would like to stay in the $6200-6400 range. (Make sure to listen to the Schmitt. It has a great part for EH and oboe...and a little exposed contra as well.)

The Chicago Symphony ON DEMAND broadcast this week features one famous oboe piece by Bizet, and one great piece for oboe/eh that I had never heard until today, Florent Schmitt's La tragédie de Salomé. (Make sure to listen to the whole Schmitt. There is a very big oboe solo at the end.) The Schmitt also has some exposed contra.
They are play two other nice bassoon pieces....Espana and Chopin 1st Concerto.
Available until June 19th.

I'm seeking any information I can about bassoons from the maker Rudolf Walter. Apart from their website, I have no frame of reference for their quality, their characteristic tone, or their price range. I've been looking around for a new instrument for some time and after looking at Fox after Fox, I've been checking out other makers, just for variety. I'm intrigued by their accolades and by some of the top notch players that endorse them (either as a player of the horns or not), including my own bassoon hero, Sergio Azzolini. Is there a US agent for Walter? Does anybody out there have positive and negative reviews? Does anyone know of one for sale? Thanks, folks.

The LA Phil's ON DEMAND concert this week features Shostakovich Sym. 4. It is a great double reed piece, and isn't done so often. It's absolutely worth a listen especially if you don't know it. It has big bassoon and EH soli.....and big section solos for both double reed groups. It will be available until next Sunday May 20th.

The second half of the show has all kinds of double reed activity for oboe/EH/bsn/contra. One moment stands out....at 2 hours 10 minutes and 50 seconds there is a BASS OBOE solo in the piece by Percy Grainger! It goes on for a minute.

Micrometer no longer lays at 0

Hi all,

I've been using a HDR micrometer (the Ferrillo design) for the past year. Yesterday I noticed that the needle no longer points to 0 but is now resting around 15/20. Has anyone had this happen to theirs? I've never knocked it over or dropped it, so I'm not sure what could be the cause of this. I've cleaned it as best I could to make sure there was no cane stuck anywhere. Any thoughts/comments are much appreciated!

I want to recommend Vincenzo Menghini's masterful "18 Studi per Fagotto in preparazione all musica contemporanea" (18 Studies for Bassoon in preparation for contemporary music) published by Scomegna Edizioni Musicali. I find them to be excellent studies for rhythm, varying meters and particularly articulation.
