Topic: Reed Cases

What type of reed case is most suitable for my bassoon reeds?  Ones with mandrels?  Without?  Ribbon Type?  "Heckel" Style?  Spring Clips?  Wood?  Plastic?

Any suggestions?

Re: Reed Cases

There was an earlier discussion of this under the bassoon reed section of the index; its one of those things were everyone has their own preference and there is no "right" answer. In addition to the cases mentioned there, Charles Double Reeds has a very nice selection of cases of various types.

Re: Reed Cases

Get a case that doesn't open when you don't want it to.
Get a case that holds the reeds securely enough so they don't get damaged.
Get a case that has some ventilation, even if you have to drill a hole or two yourself.
Get a case that doesn't alter the shape of the reed blade or tube when it dries.
this could mean staying away from spring clips, mandrels if they're the wrong shape or size or ribbons if they're too tight.

Otherwise who cares?

I use the monster 24 reed case from Forrests.  It set me back $80 but I can never complain about not having reeds!
