It is certainly a distinct honor and privilege to serve as President of the International Double Reed Society for a second term. I look for-ward to my continued association with the members of the Executive Committee and all of the many individuals who have given so unselfishly to the society over the years.-William Waterhouse deserves a special thanks for his contributions to the society for the past two terms as Second Vice President. He remains a valued friend and asset of the society. Please join me in welcoming our new 2nd Vice President, Heiko Dechert, to the Executive Board. Heiko will also be our conference host in Frankfurt.
Those of you who attended the conference in Towson are aware that the society's 20th anniversary was celebrated in great style. The previous attendance record was surpassed by over 200 registrants. The performances, lectures and seminars were exceptional and the Maryland crab feast and the harbor boat ride gave the conference a unique ambience. We are indebted to our hosts Gene Griswold, Ann Bilezikian, Norma Hooks, Virginia Lacey and Towson State University for making the conference a success in every way; thank you for all of the time and effort you expended to make it all possible.
One of our primary efforts for the 20th anniversary year was to improve the prestige of the Fernand Gillet Young Artist Competition. Those of you who heard the finals are well aware that the competition was indeed international with outstanding young artists representing Canada, Bulgaria, The Netherlands and the United States. The 1991 winner, Pauline Oostenrijk of Amsterdam, will present her recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall early in 1992. The date of the recital will be announced in the very near future so that you can plan to attend. I am sure many of you will wish to support her with your attendance.
Start making your plans to attend the 1992 Conference in Frankfurt, Germany, August 11-16. Our hosts have already assembled 48 outstanding soloists, ensembles and lecturers. This promises to be an opportunity of a lifetime; you can't afford to miss it. Our 1993 Conference will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Best wishes for a productive year.
