Phillip Austin, bassoon, performed his fifth bi-annual recital, "A Salute to the Bassoon"
at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, Cleveland, Ohio, on April 5, 1992, assisted
by Timothy Pitts, double bass; Luiz Coelho, clarinet; Richard King, horn; Donald White, cello;
and members of the Cleveland Orchestra Bassoon Quartet, David McGill and Richard

, bassoons; and Stanley Maret, bassoon and contrabassoon. The concert was dedicated to the memory of Charles Sirard (1911-1990), former principal bassoonist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Works performed were: the Duo (1925) pour basson et contrebasse by Albert Roussel; Suite (1740) for unaccompanied bassoon by Jean David Braun, Serenata in Vano for clarinet, bassoon, horn, cello, and bass by Carl Nielsen; and the bassoon ensemble works: Allon, Gay Gay, by Guillaume Costeley; Kleine Suite No. 1 (Op. 55-1974) by Victor Bruns, Scherzo - Tongueicato Ostinato from the 4th Symphony by Peter Tchaikovsky, The Grouchy Old Bear by Julius Fucik (featuring Stanley Maret, contrabassoon); Bassoonists' Holiday by Leroy Anderson; Adagio from the Organ Sonata, Op. 56, by Alexandre Guilmant, arr. by Ernest Miller; Lassus Bassoon by Henry Filmore, arr. by Andrew Balent; and the world premiere of Three Dances for Four Bassoons by Andrew Balent.

MSG Roy Carson, SFC Lynn Peck, and SSG Richard Spittel (L to R)Master Sergeant Roy Carson, Sergeant First Class Lynn Peck, and Staff Sergeant Richard Spittel, performed a Concert of Music for Bassoon at Fort Meade, Maryland, on February 27, 1992, assisted by Beth MacDonald, piano; and Staff Sergeant Catherine Burge, piano. Works performed were: Tarentella Op. 20 with 3 bassoons by Weissenborn; Allegro Moderato from the Arpeggione Sonata by Schubert (Spittel, Burge); Gravy Waltz by Ray Brown and Take Five by Paul Desmond, for 3 bassoons; Concertstuck: Souvenir of Donizetti by James Waterson (Carson, MacDonald); and Finley Finale, Finally for 3 bassoons by Anton Dismuk Finley.

Renee Anthony Dee, bassoon, performed her own transcription of the Mendelssohn Concertpiece #2 in D minor, Op. 114, assisted by Larry Kramer, clarinet and the Mansfield Jeff Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jeff Holland Cook in Mansfield, Ohio, on May 9, 1992 as part of the last subscription concert of the season for the orchestra.

Phillip Gottling, bassoon, performed a guest recital at the Shanghai Conservatory, Shanghai, China on December 30, 1991, assisted by Wang Ai-Mei, piano. Works performed were: Sonata in G minor, Op. 24/5 by Francois Devienne; Sonata in C Major by Fasch; Ma Celine by Frederick Berr; Three Inventions for Solo Bassoon by George Perle; and Sarabande et Cortege by Dutilleux.

D. Keith McClelland, bassoon, performed a Faculty Recital at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on September 9, 1991, assisted by Fay Adams, piano; and William Davis, bassoon. Works performed were: Sonata in D, D-384, Op. Post. 137-1, (Originally for violin and piano) by Franz Schubert; Sonata #3 for bassoon and piano by Alec Wilder; Fantasy and Presto for 2 bassoons by William Davis; Sonata No. 6 for 2 bassoons by Carl Jacobi, and the Hurlstone Sonata for bassoon and piano.

Susan Nigro, contrabassoon, performed a Contrabassoon Recital of Music by European Composers on January 31, 1992, assisted by Mark Lindeblad, piano. Works performed were Six Pieces for contrabassoon and piano, Op. 80, by Victor Bruns; Impromptu by Ralph Nicholson, Quintet, Op. 63 (originally for string quartet) by Willy Hess; Divertimento by Ottmar Nussio; Jimbo's Lullaby by Claude Debussy, arr. by Mark Fitzgerald; Leviathan, Op. 59, by Ruth Gipps; and Two Pieces for contrabassoon, Op. 57 by Victor Bruns.

Susan also performed a Contrabassoon Recital of Music by American Composers at Skokie, Illinois on February 9, 1992, assisted by Mark Lindeblad, piano. Works performed were: Heart Desire: Fantasy after a Tune by Samuel Scheidt by Donald Draganski; Music for Contrabassoon and Piano, Op. 28, by Frank E. Warren; Concerto, Op. 86 by Vazgen Muradian; Romance by Robert Organn, Slow Dance and Quick March (from Little Suite, Op. 23) by Harold Laudenslager, arr. by Joel Friedman; Concerto Contra by Harold Laudenslager; and Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann by William Davis.

David Rachor, bassoon, gave a Guest Recital at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, on February 11, 1992, assisted by Robin Guy, piano and Loretta Thomas, bassoon. Works performed were: Sonata #2 (from Les Delices de la Solitude) by Michael Corrette; Recit et Allegro by Noel Gallon; Sonata for 2 bassoons by Mozart; The Trees Reach (from 3 Portraits - 1990) by Phillip Schroeder; Variations sur Au Clair de la Lune by Francois Gebauer; and Three Pieces (1991) by Robert C. Jones.

The students and friends of David Rachor: Michael Stittsworth, Carmen Borchordt, Shelly Driscol, Ann Klaessy, Val Voshell, Mark Lines, Phillip Dann, Tim Dale, Laurie Hoeppner, Benjamin Lehnen, and Marsh Walgasper, bassoons; performed the First Annual Bassoon and Friends Concert of pieces with at least one bassoon at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, on March 10, 1992, assisted by Aaron Hanson, clarinet and bass clarinet; Julie Schultz, clarinets; Peter Hoekje, cornet; Maureen Becker, flute; Beth Boelk, oboe; Brian Lovig, horn; Wendy Hamann, bass saxophone, and Joy Tjarks, Svetlana Gabruk, and Patrice Ewoldt, piano. Works performed were Sonata #4 by Galliard (Stittsworth, Tjarks); Rondo-Presto from Duo #4 by Gebauer (Hansen, Borchardt); Allegro from Divertimento #1 by Mozart, arr. by Alan Hawkins, (Driscoll, Klaessy, Voshell), Sonata #7 for cornet and bassoon by Dario Castello (Hoekje, Lines); Movements from La Cheminee du Roi Rene by Milhaud (Becker, Boelk, Schultaz, Lovig, Borchardt); Leicht bewegt from Sonate (1938) by Hindemith (Lines, Gabruk); Allegro Moderate from the Concerto for 2 bassoons by Vanhal (Dann, Gale, Ewoldt); Three Movements from Duettino by Bozza (Hoeppner, Tehnen), Spiritoso from Trio in C Major by Haydn, arr. by Alan Hawkins, (Driscol, Lehnen, Lines); Minuet by Mozart (Hanson, bass clarinet; Hamann, bass saxophone, and Borchardt, contrabassoon); and Thunder and Blazes by Julius Fucik, arr. by John Iskra (Driscoll, Lines, Rachor, Walgasper, bassoons; Lehnen, contrabassoon).

Maria Schreffler, bassoon, performed her Senior Recital at the New England Con servatory of Music, Boston, Massachusetts on February 21, 1992. Works performed were Sonata for 2 Bassoons by Alan Hovhaness; Concerto #2 by Victor Bruns; Study in Variations Form, Op. 34, by Jorgen Bentazen; Don't Walk Barefoot Through the Kitchen (Rhapsody for bassoon and ensemble) by Elliot Miles McKinley and the Sonata, Op. 168, by Saint-Saens, with Noriko Sato, harp.

MSU Bassoon QuartetBarrick Stees, bassoon, performed an April Fools Faculty Recital on April 1, 1992, at Michigan State University, East Lansing, assisted by Will Peebles, and Walter Peebles, bassoons, the MSU Bassoon Quartet; James Carameta, Deborah DeVos, Melinda Fulk, and Greg Pritchard; and Deborah Moriarty, piano. Works performed were: Croqius pour deux Bassons (Three Frogs) by Henri Tomasi (Will Peebles, Stees), Cadenze Fiorita e Polacca, Op. 42 by Ferdinand Seidel (Stees, Moriarty); Funeral March of a Marionette by Charles Gounod arr. by G. Lotzenhiser, and I was a Teenage Bassoonist by David Carroll and John Miller (MSU Bassoon Quartet); Duettino pour deux Bassons by Bozza (Will Peebles, Stees); Zeppelin der Kleine, Op. 121, by Franz J. Liftl (Stees, Moriarty complete with a balloon for the low B flats!); Zwei Stucke für Kontrafagott und Klavier, Op. 57, by Victor Bruns (Will Peebles, Moriarty); and Largo al Phagotum for bassoon and contra by Rossini, arr. by Gebauer, Finn, Peebles and Stees (Stees, Will Peebles).

Richard Spittel, bassoon, performed a Doctoral Recital at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, on November 23, 1992, assisted by Dr. Raffi S. Kasparian, piano. Works performed were: Variations Concertante by Ida Gotkovsky; Kaddish (in memory of Isaac Hollins) by Vivian Adelberg Rudow; Sonatina for bassoon and piano by Ellen Jane Lorenz; Jazz Variations for Solo Bassoon by Libby Larsen; and Lyric Sonatina for bassoon and piano by Jean Coulthard.
