Arno Mariotti, former solo oboist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra,
died of cancer in February of this year. He was 81. Mr. Mariotti
had played with the Detroit Symphony from the early 1950s until
1973, when he became professor of music at the University of Michigan
in Ann Arbor, until his retirement in 1982. Earlier he had played
with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony, and
the Pittsburgh Symphony.
He was born in Chemnitz, Germany, and came to the United States
in 1920. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
He is survived by his wife, Florence, and his sons Philip and
David. The members of I.D.R.S. send them sincere sympathy.
