Double Reed Crostic

by James Burton

DIRECTIONS. The primary method of solving this type of puzzle is to find the words defined on the next page, write them into the numbered blanks, and transfer each of the letters to the appropriate squares above. Upon completion, a quotation from a published source can be read (across only). A secondary procedure may be used after several words have been correctly entered into the grid. It then becomes possible to guess what some of the words of the quotation are likely to be, especially basic words such as "the" and special content words such as "music" and "reed." Once the missing letters are interpolated, they become new clues when transferred over to the corresponding blanks of the "words" column. Further clues develop as the name of the source (usually the author and title) is revealed by the first letters of all the clue words, reading downward. Any use of a language other than English is indicated in the definition. "Ab." indicates an abbreviation. "Hy." indicates hyphenated words or names. The solution will appear in the next issue of The Double Reed.
