About the Writer
I follow this syllabus with my own bassoon students in selecting studies and literature for their progression in becoming better players. It should be understood that it is difficult to ascribe the various categories in the syllabus to levels in school, since each student has different aptitudes, training and opportunities. I have found that for the most part, my most advanced students in high school have started work on those items in the "Advanced Intermediate" listing, although this is not a hard and fast rule, by any means. The last category, "Advanced", might not be approached until after graduate school. In other words, this syllabus might cover a whole lifetime of bassoon playing, instead of only a relatively small bracket of time spent in high school or college.
In considering the relative difficulty of each item listed here, I not only tried to assess the technical difficulty, but also the musical difficulty. Some easier pieces technically are not performable until a player has acquired musical maturity, sophistication and/or a certain command of the instrument.
In general, I subscribe to the philosophy that the musical literature any student performs should be somewhat easier than the studies he or she is simultaneously working on. The studies then stretch the student's technique and the literature provides a vehicle for communicating with an audience under pleasant circumstances. Music should be fun, not a terrifying chore!
Under each category of difficulty I have often made small groups of pieces which are associated with each other either by chronological or generic significance. It should be understood that there is much literature that might fit into any of these groups which I have not included either because I felt that they were not as strong musically or because I was not familiar enough with them.
I hope that this listing is of use to you; it has worked very wen for my students. If you have any questions regarding literature for the bassoon, or any others regarding playing problems, I hope you will feel free to contact me at Montana State University, Department of Music, Bozeman, MT 59717.
