- Concerto for Bassoon and Chamber Orchestra by Stephen
Dodgson
- On a brief trip to Canada, Mr. Dodgson phoned me to say hello (I had
mentioned this Concerto in one of the very first TTWB newsletters) and to ask if
I'd like a copy of the music to his well-known (in Britain) concerto. With the
music now in hand I can inform readers that Dodgson, a prolific composer often
for winds, has done the bassoon real service: a most interesting solo part and a
varied and sprightly orchestral interweave. For soloists wishing a set of parts,
please write the composer: Stephen Dodgson, 4 Scarth Road, London S.W. 13.
- Sextet for Bassoon and String Quintet (1978) by Talivaldis
Kenins
- This work was commissioned by this Editor (see Performances) and is
intended ideally to be played by a player who performs on both the French and
German systems of bassoon. The two solo lines for French bassoon are not too
difficult, incidentally. But any bassoonist can play the work with pleasure. My
suggestion for a change of tone color during the sections written for French
bassoon would be to use a lighter, more flexible (but not buzzy) reed to emulate
the free lightness of the Buffet instrument. The work may be ordered from:
CANADIAN MUSIC CENTRE, 1263 Bay St., Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5 R 2C1.
- Das Fagott by Werner Seltmann and Gunter Angerhöfer
- A grand new Schule for bassoon students to grow with. In this
Editor's opinion Das Fagott is the modern text for the German system bassoon. It
is so thoughtfully and clearly laid out, and it contains literally years of
study, duet and solo material. So large is the work that it is not completed at
this date. Of the eventual 6 large volumes, I have been sent numbers I, IV and
V. (see separate article and photograph). The editor and publisher (East
Germany) is: VEB DEUTSCHER VERLAG FUR MUSIK, LEIPSIG 701, Karlstr. 10, D.D.R.
(The text is in German and English translation done by London bassoonist William
Waterhouse). Price is not yet known at date of this writing. The Western
Hemisphere price and distributor (if any) will be announced soon in The
Double Reed.
