New Bassoon Concerto Reviewed

Hobart, Tasmania (Australia) witnessed recently a most interesting event in the Bassoon calendar. This was the world premier performance of 'Concerto in the Classic Style' by the versatile Polish composer Josef Szwed.

Soloist with the T.S.O. conducted by Leonard Dommett was Pawel Podleska a Polish born member of the orchestra and a life-long friend of the composer.

The idea for the composition was the brainchild of Mr. Podleska who, on a recent visit to Poland actually suggested to the composer the first subject figure for the opening movement. This Allegro is a model of classical style even to the extent of including a Cadenza.

The second movement, Andante Cantabile, is full of delightful melodic invention as is the rest of the work, and gives the soloist ample opportunity to shine.

In case the reader thinks that the work is a mere pastiche of classical cliches it should perhaps be added that the outer movements, particularly the first, contain some slightly acid neo-classic harmonic touches which are cleverly resolved just in time to preserve the overall classical concept.

Whilst there may be some disagreement amongst purists as to the degree of inclusion of neo-classic elements bassoonists will undoubtedly welcome the opportunity to familiarize themselves with this unique new concerto.
