Have you been looking for some new options for your recital programming? Why not consider the
following list of oboe music by women composers from around the world?

As a result of the women's movement, which has flourished in several western countries since the early twentieth century, the doors of cultural opportunity have opened to more women than ever before, and we are experiencing a long- overdue boom in the composition of music by women. The following is not an exhaustive list, but only a start for the dedicated. Sadly, many more such works remain unpublished.

This list has been drawn from recordings, word of mouth, and primarily from the landmark work by Aaron Cohen, the International Encyclopedia of Women Composers,[1] which includes works lists of 5000 women composers from 70 countries. Virginia Snodgrass Gifford's bibliography of oboe materials at the Library of Congress was also consulted.[2] If you know of additional pieces now published, please notify me in care of:

About the writer...
Cynthia Green, oboist, joined the faculty of Eastern Montana College Department of Music after completing a doctorate in oboe and music history at the Eastman School of Music. She was a member of several professional orchestras in New York City and Connecticut, including the New York Lyric Opera, Connecticut Philharmonic, Greenwich Philharmonia, National Orchestral Association in Carnegie Hall, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Her principal teachers have been Richard Killmer and Ronald Roseman. Cynthia also studied with Lothar Koch of the Berlin Philharmonic in West Berlin on a Rotary International Fellowship, and toured with the Vienna Youth Orchestra. At the University of Michigan she earned a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree in musicology and a Master of Music in performance. She is currently principal oboist of the Billings and Great Falls Symphony Orchestras. Most recent national appearances include premieres at the International Double Reed Society Convention in Boulder, Colorado in 1985 and the National Women's Music Festival in 1986.
