THE CHARLESTON (WEST VIRGINIA) SYMPHONY WIND QUINTET (Ellen Beal, flute; Lorraine Dorsey, oboe; Robert
Turizziam, clarinet; Marsha Palmer, horn; and Klif Hodgkin,
bassoon) performed the premiere concert of their premiere
season on Friday, October 2, 1987 at St. Mark's Methodist Church
in Charleston. Works performed were: Trois pieces breves by
Jacques Ibert; Quintet in B flat, Op. 56, No. 1 by Franz
Danzi; Opus Number Zoo by Luciano Berio; Deux mouvements
by Jacques Ibert; and Quintet, Op. 43 by Carl Nielsen.
DAVID DEBOLT performed a faculty recital at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, assisted by Margaret Baxtresser, piano; and Frank Wiley, harpsichord on Thursday, October 1, 1987. Works performed were Suite, Op. 40 by Boismortier; Sonata (1952) by Alvin Etler; Alborada del Gracioso by Ravel (transcribed by Sol Schoenbach); Poeme by Bernard Garfield; and the Andante e Rondo ungarese by von Weber.
WILLIAM DIETZ performed a faculty recital at the University of Arizona, Tucson, on Monday, September 14, 1987, assisted by Paula Fan, piano. Works performed were: Premiere Solo by Bordeau; Sonata for Bassoon and Piano by William D. Davis; Three Etudes of Spring for Solo Bassoon ("Spring in Mid-Manhattan", "The Spanish Dancer", and "The Duck") by Melvin Solomon; and the Grand Concerto by Hummel.
BERNARD GARFIELD performed the seldom played Suite, Concertino for Bassoon and Orchestra in F Major, Op. 16 by Wolf-Ferrari on October 25, 1987 at the Schubert Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was assisted by the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Anshel Brusilow.
HAROLD ROBISON performed
a faculty recital on Tuesday, October 13, 1987, at Ohio
University, Athens, Ohio. He was assisted by Joseph Butler, harpsichord,
and Matthias Steg
mann, guitar. Works performed were a Suite of Pieces for Bassoon
and Keyboard (1732) by Boismortier, Five Impromptus for
Guitar and Bassoon (1983) by Friedrick Wanek, Sonorities
VI for Bassoon and Harpsichord (1978) by Walter Hartley, and
Sonata in G minor, Op. 24, No. 5 (? 1788) by Devienne.
CHRISTOPHER WEAIT, bassoon, and James Pyne, clarinet, performed
"A Chamber Concert for Clarinet and Bassoon" as part
of the faculty recital Series at Ohio State University, Columbus,
on Monday, October 5, 1987. They were assisted by WILLIAM BAKER,
oboe; Debra Lew Harder, piano; Kyle Pyne, clarinet; Charles
Waddell, horn; Gary Sousa, conductor; and the OSU Graduate Clarinet
Choir. Works performed were Quintet in C minor, Op. 30,
for oboe, two clarinets, horn, and bassoon, and piano; and Double
Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon by Karl Stamitz (first performance
of the transcription of the accompaniment for clarinet choir by
Christopher Weait).
