On the cover: Thanks
go to Stevens Hewitt, retired oboist from the Philadelphia Orchestra
for submitting this intriguing photograph of four "mystery"
bassoonists (and dog) playing on Buffet French bassoons. So far
no one (including Maurice Allard) has been able to identify them.
Their instruments have only two thumb keys (no bis whisper key)
on the wing joint, which probably means that they had no C# key
for the left hand little finger - all C#'s being played with a
forked fingering - so all whisper key duties were for the little
finger alone. Can anyone help us identify these men? And what
about the dog?.!! ED
