Frantisek Xaver Dusek -- Six Parthias for two oboes and bassoon. Edited by Rudolf Komorous (E. C. Kerby Ltd. 198 Davenport Road, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5R 1J2. Two volumes, each $7.50 for Score and parts, total $15.00 plus postage. Canadian funds.)
Here are six very nice chamber works from a less well-known 18th century Czech composer. They are published for the first time thanks to the editing work of composer/bassoonist Rudolf Komorous of Czechoslovakia, now teaching and residing in Victoria, B.C., Canada. The composer (1731-1799) founded the first Czech piano school. Dusek's wife, Josefina, was a celebrated singer. Their villa, Bertramka, (now a Mozart museum) was the meeting place of many leading artists of the time including W. A. Mozart, who completed the score of Don Giovanni there. The print quality is clear and easy to read. The editing is very musical and in keeping with excellent 18th century style. Mr. Komorous has even distinguished between long and short appoggiature. Each Parthia has four contrasting movements. The music is very nice and one wishes that all movements were developed to a greater length. Should be good program material for double reed ensembles everywhere.

Bernard Garfield (Solo Bassoonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra). His well-liked and oft-performed Quartet for Bassoon, Violin, Viola and Cello (1950) is now printed and available exclusively from: RAYMOND A. OJEDA 98 Briar Road Kentfield, CA 94904 U.S.A.

Donald M. Hardisty -- a new woodwind quintet has recently been released: Pisces of the Zodiac (Shawnee Press Inc., Delaware Water Gap, Pa. 18327, U.S.A. Score and parts $1000 U.S.) A work of 5-1/6 minutes' duration; "Pisces" is described by the composer as, "reminiscent of late Impressionist Period compositions." ".... (it) was inspired by the phenomenon of small flying fish seen late one February evening. The imaginary marine images were viewed to be distinct characters in an outer space-aquatic drama."
