INTERNATIONAL DOUBLE REED SOCIETY
FERNAND GILLET YOUNG ARTIST PERFORMANCE COMPETITION: AUGUST 12-15, 1981,TEXAS
TECH. UNIVERSITY, LUBBOCK, TX
On the occasion of the tenth annual meeting of the IDRS in Lubbock, Texas,
in August, 1981, the Society is pleased to announce the first annual performance
competition for young artists. The competition is dedicated to the memory of the
late master oboist and honorary member of the IDRS, Fernand Gillet, and offers a
prize of $500.00 for first place, $250.00 for second place, and $100.00 for
third place to the finalists.
- The following are the rules of the competition:
- 1. Eligibility -- Those oboists or bassoonists who have
not reached their 25th birthday before the date of the final audition are
eligible to enter.
- 2. Levels of competition -- There will be three levels of
competition: a) preliminary audition; b) semifinal audition; and c) final
audition.
- a. Preliminary audition -- All entrants to the
competition must fill out the attached application form and send a tape
recording along with an application fee of $25.00 to the chairman of the
performance competition. The recording will be a 7 1/2 ips reel-to-reel tape of
good quality, and will contain two works chosen by the applicant not to exceed
30 minutes in length overall, including pauses between works and movements.
These may be selected from unaccompanied or accompanied solo or concerto
repertoire. No application postmarked after March 15, 1981, will be considered.

- b. Semifinal audition -- Six semifinalists will be
selected by the competition committee (three oboists and three bassoonists) and
announced by June 1, 1981. (All applicants must agree to appear and perform at
the semifinal and final auditions if selected.) These semifinalists will perform
at the meeting in Lubbock before a distinguished panel of judges. The work to be
performed at the semifinal audition is: oboe- Sonata Op. 166, Camille Saint-Saëns;
bassoon -- Sonata Opus 168, Camille Saint-Saëns. From the six
semifinalists, three finalists will be selected to perform before the judges and
the attending members of the society in open concert. The works to be performed
on the final concert are:
- i) a movement of the semifinal work and
- ii) oboe -- Paladilhe, Concertino; bassoon -- J. F. Fasch, Sonata in C
Major.
- Accompanists will be provided by the host institution for both the
semifinal and final auditions.
- The awards will be announced at the final general meeting of the
conference. The judges may decide to award fewer or no prizes or to combine
prizes in the event of a tie. The decision of the judges is final.

COMPOSITION COMPETITION
This year's competition will be for an unpublished musical composition for
at least one double reed instrument in combination with stringed instruments
including guitar. A prize of $500.00 will be awarded the first place winner, and
the work will be performed at the Texas conference in August, 1981, and
published by Southern Music Company if the composer wishes it.
The rules for the competition are:
- 1. All compositions must be unpublished original works.
- 2. First performance rights are reserved for the Society at the Texas
conference.
- The composer may choose to provide his own performers for this occasion.
- 3. The winning works and all other entries become the property of the IDRS
Library at Indianola, Iowa, and unless written instructions to the contrary are
received, the librarian will be allowed to make copies of any composition for
members of the Society at cost from the original.
- 4. A copy of the composition, including parts, and a tape (7 1/2 ips) are
to be furnished to the Society if the work is to be considered.
- 5. Composer's names will be covered to provide anonymity.
- 6. Entries will be accepted between February 1 and March 15, 1981. No work
postmarked after March 15 will be considered. Winners will be announced by June
1, 1981.
- 7. The society reserves the right to declare no winner if the judges feel
no work qualifies. Decision of the judges will be final.
