NOTES ON THE EDINBURGH CONVENTION
The Ninth Annual Meeting of the Society took place at the University of
Edinburgh in Scotland August 12 to 15, 1980. I can only echo the President's
enthusiasm for this exciting event. Attendance represented many countries, and a
list of members participating is included in this issue. The program book is
also reproduced here. Space limitations preclude reprinting biographies / of the
participating artists. "Reviews" of performances by oboists will be
featured in a forthcoming issue.
I share the President's gratitude to and admiration for Laurence Taylor and his
masterful organization of this landmark event in the Society's history and I add
my congratulations to Leon Goossens on his elevation to the distinguished list
of honorary members. As always these events give one a splendid opportunity to
renew old friendships and to make new ones. For me it was especially pleasant to
see Evelyn Barbirolli and Janet Craxton again, as well as Alain and Annede
Gourdon, to have the chance to perform once more with long-time friends and
colleagues Gerald Corey and Evelyn McCarty, to visit with Adrian Gnam, Peggy
Rivenburg, Chris Weait, Bill Baker, and many friends on the executive board, as
well as Robert Gilbert, Peter Klatt, and Alan Fox, just three of the many
business people who help to keep the Society functioning. And the virtuosic
performances of Juoko Teikari and Malcolm Messiter were special indeed. Please
watch the December issue for more news and photos from this very exciting event.
