Judy Leclaire has won the position of solo bassoon in the New York Philharmonic. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, New York) where she studied with David Van Hoesen, Judy had played only one and a half years with the San Diego Symphony before successfully earning this prized position. To my knowledge, she is the first woman to hold a solo bassoon position in one of the top five symphony orchestras in the United States. And in the same five orchestras (Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York and Philadelphia) Judy LeClaire becomes only the second woman to hold a solo woodwind chair, the first being Doriot Anthony Dwyer who is solo flutist of the Boston Symphony. Bravo and continued success to you in your career, Judy!
Nadina Mackey has won the position of second bassoon with the Montreal Symphony (Canada) in competition with a large number of candidates from the United States and Canada. Nadina, whose home is in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, is currently studying at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia where she has been a pupil of both Bernard Garfield and Sol Schoenbach. Congratulations, Nadina!

David Van Hoesen, Bassoon professor at Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York. Mr. Van Hoesen is on Sabbatical leave this term and is performing bassoon acoustical research with IDRS' long-time friend, Dr. Arthur Benade of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. While Van Hoesen is on leave his students have a rare opportunity: they are studying alternately with two brilliant bassoonist/ teachers: David Carroll, formerly solo bassoonist of the Montreal Symphony and Professor at University of Toronto, Canada; and Christopher Weait, Co-Principal bassoonist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Interesting Coincidence Department:
Ottawa, Canada bassoonist Kenneth Irons sends notice that his home is on Quincy Avenue, and he originally comes from Dundee, Scotland; while a bassoonist he admires greatly, Sherman Walt (solo bassoon, Boston Symphony) lives on Dundee Avenue in Quincy, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
