FERNAND GILLET PERFORMANCE COMPETITION 1981


The first annual Fernand Gillet Performance Competition of the International Double Reed Society took place during the annual Conference of the Society in Lubbock, Texas. Six semi-finalists, three oboists and three bassoonists, performed for the members and the judges on Thursday, August 13th. From these three finalists were chosen by the judges and performed in the final competition concert on Saturday, August 18. The winners were then announced at the General Meeting that same day. The judges for the competition were: Sol Schoenbach, Director Emeritus, Settlement Music School, Philadelphia, Pa.; Richard Killmer, principal oboe, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; Ryohei Nakagawa, principal bassoon, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Japan, and Liviu Vacol, principal oboe, Essen Symphony Orchestra, Essen, Germany.

Terry B. Ewell, Bassoon. Terry Ewell is now in his third season as principal bassoonist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Washington. his principal teacher has been Arthur Grossman, professor of bassoon at the University of Washington and bassoonist with the Soni Ventorum woodwind quintet. Terry has attended the Aspen Festival, the Music Academy of the West, and the Yale Summer Music School. In addition he has studied with Leonard Sharrow, Norman Herzberg, Sidney Rosenberg, and recently with Stephen Maxym. Terry Ewell's solo appearances have included performances with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

David McGill, Bassoon. David McGill has studied bassoon with Jane Johnson, Dan Phipps, John Miller, Bernard Garfield and Marcel Moyse. In 1979 he was winner of the Tulsa Philharmonic Young Artist Competition and performed with the orchestra at age of 17. He won the principal bassoon position with the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra for the 1980-81 season and was a finalist in the National Arts Recognition and Talent Search in 1981. He has been accepted as a student of Sol Schoenbach at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and will begin study there this fall.

Lorraine Dorsey, Oboe. Lorraine Dorsey is an undergraduate oboe performance major at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music (CCM). Lorraine, who has an honors scholarship. is a student of DeVere Moore. During the summer, she studies with Pamela Pecha Woods of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Lorraine started studying oboe with David McGuire and was a member of several youth, civic and theater orchestras in the Cleveland area. She had the opportunity of appearing as soloist in the Marcello Oboe Concerto with the Bay Orchestra.

At CCM, she has been principal oboist in both the Concert and Philharmonia Orchestras and was chosen to be a member of the Young Artists Recital Program, performing as a soloist. Lorraine has played with ensembles and orchestras in Indiana and Kentucky as well as in the Cincinnati area. She received the distinction of passing her performance boards with honors for two consecutive years and was the winner of the 1980 Marcel Dandois Memorial Prize.
