MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Noah A. Knepper

Changes, changes, changes, paraphrasing the saying "All you can be sure of is that it will change." Our co-editor of The Double Reed, Ron Klimko is in Paris for the year; my own music department has a new chairman; I have met and heard the two lovely young ladies who make up the new oboe section of our local symphony; and our society's business affairs are now shifted to our new Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Lowry Riggins, who has held most of the offices of IDRS in the past. All business formerly handled by the Treasurer's office should now be directed to:

Lowry Riggins, Exec . Secy. -Treas. IDRS
626 Lakeshore Drive
Monroe, LA 71203 USA

We are grateful to and thank outgoing Treasurer Richard Meek for his two terms of office, for computerizing our membership list, for hosting our 1981 convention, and for putting up with all the miseries of the office.

We are working on the travel plans for the 1984 meeting in Graz, Austria, and plan an announcement to simplify reservations and money transfers for members.

Two very distinguished musicians were recently elected to honorary membership to IDRS and have graciously accepted. They are Lady Evelyn Rothwell Barbirolli of London and Paul Henry Lang of Connecticut. For the few who may not know them, Lady Barbirolli is a distinguished world-wide oboe soloist, widow of the late conductor, Sir John Barbirolli, and a lady to whom many of today's favorite oboe works are dedicated. Dr. Lang was an active professional bassoonist having played under Richard Strauss and Felix Weingartner before becoming an eminent music critic, musicologist, and author. He is now retired from Columbia University and living in New England. Procedures for nominating additional honorary members will be carried in the next Double Reed.

IDRS needs to have someone become a temporary or perhaps an ongoing Historian. Those people who gave birth to and helped the society to its present status are almost all still active in the organization, so information is readily available. We need someone or someones to put this into a permanent record now. If you know of someone interested in this task, please contact me. Perhaps this could constitute a Master's thesis.

I hope you are having a good year and that it will get better for you.
