KANSAS CITY, MO. -- The newly-formed Midwest Double Reed Society announces that it has membership openings available for all persons interested in double reeds, as well as district representatives for its designated states of Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
Organized just last October, the Midwest Double Reed Society (MDRS) "is open to double reed devotees of all ages and levels of expertise -- professionals, amateurs, students, teachers, repairpeople, and just plain enthusiasts!", explained Anne Miller, instructor of oboe at the University of Missouri and the Society's president. "The International Double Reed Society was founded well over ten years ago, but to our knowledge, ours is the first regional double reed association. Although we may look vicious, armed as we are with scraping knives and other reed-making paraphernalia, double reed players have always enjoyed a close sense of camaraderie, united by the foibles of our sometimes cantankerous instruments. With the MDRS, we hope to encourage this camaraderie, as well as to promote double reed playing in general through such projects as master classes, concerts, recitals, instrument repair seminars, music reading sessions, and workshops for students and their teachers. "
Since its inception on October 27, 1983, the MDRS has held several recitals and master classes, with many more planned in the near future.
Membership in the MDRS is open to double reed enthusiasts throughout the six state area. Annual dues are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for full-time students.
