William D. Davis, Chairman, Gillet Competition Twenty-three bassoonists entered the Fifth Annual Gillet Performance Competition by sending tape recordings for the preliminary audition. Seventeen participants were from the United States, two from Sweden, and one each from France, New Zealand, Israel, and Costa Rica. The required selections on the tapes were the Faure Piece for Bassoon and Piano and the first movement of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto, K. 191. The preliminary audition Judges were:
The five semifinalists chosen were:
1. Christian Davidsson - Malmo, Sweden. Mr. Davidsson is a member of the Malmo Symphony Orchestra-, his main teacher has been Asker Svendsen in Copenhagen, Denmark.
2. Douglas Fisher - Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Fisher is a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra; his main teacher has been David Van Hoesen at the Eastman School of music.
3. Magnus Nilsson - Kungaelv, Sweden. Mr. Nilsson is a member of the Norrkoeping Symphony Orchestra; his main teacher has been Arne Nilsson at the Gothenburg Musical Academy.
4. Lawrence Tilson - Parsippany, New Jersey. Mr. Tilson is pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the State University of New York in Stony Brook, where he studies with Arthur Weisberg.
5. Stephen Wisner - Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mr. Wisner has just completed the Master of Music degree at the University of Michigan, where he studied with Lewis Hugh Cooper.
On August 13, 1985 the semifinalists performed the first movement of the Mozart Bassoon Concerto, K. 191 for a distinguished panel of j udges in open concert at the Fourteenth Annual Conference of the International Double Reed Society at the University of Colorado. The panel of judges consisted of:
All five semifinalists were selected to participate in the final audition. The finals were performed on August 14 before the panel of judges and the I.D.R.S. membership. The required work was the Tansman Suite for Bassoon and Piano. From this performance the prizes were awarded as follows:
Thanks are extended to all of' the judges for this year's competition; and to Dr. Robert Olson, the 1985 conference host, and his marvelous staff', who were extremely helpful in making competition arrangements. Special thanks are extended to Ms. Debby Schmidt-Lobis, the piano accompanist for the semifinal and final auditions. Ms. Schmidt-Lobis' willingness to spend many hours rehearsing with the five contestants contri buted enormously to the success of the competition.
Next year's Gillet Competition will be for oboists only. The semifinal and final auditions will be held in Winston- Salem, North Carolina on August I I - 14, 1986.
