Seventeen oboists entered the Sixth Annual Gillet Performance Competition by sending tape recordings for the preliminary audition. Thirteen participants were from the United States, and four were from Austria, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. The required selections on the tapes were the second movement of the Marcello Concerto in C Minor and the first movement of the Mozart Concerto in C Major, K. 314. The preliminary audition judges were:
Because of a tie for fifth place, six semifinalists were chosen:
1. Heidi Ann Chisholm - Pacific Palisades, California. Ms. Chisholm is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Robert Sprenkle and Richard Killmer.
2. Robert David Corina - Athens, Georgia. Mr. Corina is a student at the University of Georgia, where he studies with John Corina.
3. Christophe Dorsaz - Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Dorsaz is a graduate of the Conservatoire Superieure de Geneve; he has studied with Roger Reversy and Bernard Schenkel.
4. Gunther Ettl - Graz, Austria. Mr. Ettl is a student at the Hochschule fur Musik in Graz; he has studied with Hans Kroissenbrunner and Albert Nagele.
5. Alex Klein - Curitiba, Brazil. Mr. Klein is a graduate of Oberlin College, where he studied with James Caldwell.
6. Richard Reed - Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Reed is a student at the University of Florida, where he studied with Mark Ostoich.
The semifinal audition was held on August 11, 1986 before a panel of judges in open concert at the Fifteenth Annual Conference of the International Double Reed Society at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem
The work performed was the first movement of the Mozart Concerto in C Major, K. 314. The panel of judges consisted of John Mack, Basil Reeve, John Ellis, William Baker, and Charles Veazey.
The judges selected Heidi Ann Chisholm, Christophe Dorsaz, and Alex Klein to participate in the final audition. The finals were held on August 13 before a large audience of I.D.R.S. members and a panel of judges consisting of William Baker, John Ellis, Patrick McFarland, Ronald Richards, and Charles Veazey. The work performed was the Goossens Concerto in One Movement, Op. 45. From this performance, the judges awarded prizes as follows:
As the winner of the 1986 Gillet Competition, Mr. Klein performed
the Goossens Concerto in One Movement with orchestra on
the final conference program on the evening of August 14. Also
on that program, last year's Gillet Competition winner, Christian
Davidsson of Malmo, Sweden, performed the Mozart Concerto for
Bassoon, K. 191. Mr. Davidsson also presented a solo recital
earlier in the conference.
Thanks are extended to all of the judges for this year's competition. Special thanks are extended to Mr. Bruce Moss, the piano accompanist for the semifinal and final auditions. Mr. Moss' willingness to spend many hours rehearsing with the five contestants contributed enormously to the success of the competition.
Next year's Gillet Competition will be for bassoonists only. The
semifinal and final auditions will be held at the Sixteenth Annual
I.D.R.S. Conference at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on
August 16-19, 1987. The required literature is:
