About the Author
It would appear that nineteenth-century composers neglected the oboe both as a solo instrument and in chamber settings, especially when compared with the wealth of oboe literature from the pens of their baroque, classic, and twentieth-century counterparts. Recent articles by Laila Storch in The Double Reed and by Charles-David Lehrer in the I.D.R.S. Journal regarding nineteenth-century solo oboe literature have pointed out the fallacy of this generalization,[1] but a bibliography devoted to nineteenth-century chamber music for oboe has not been readily available up to this time. Since romantic, virtuostic solo wind works are now vogue and are being frequently programmed, perhaps the uncovering of nearly 200 nineteenth-century chamber works which involve oboe will add substance to oboists' romantic repertoire and interest to forthcoming recitals.
The study...
With the advent of the technical
improvements made to the oboe during the nineteenth century, the
rising supremacy of the orchestra, and the virtuostic demands
made on all the winds, surely composers could not have ignored
chamber wind music as a genre. The existence of a large body of
late eighteenth-century wind chamber music such as the divertimentos
of Haydn and Mozart, the emergence of the woodwind quintet at
the end of the eighteenth century, and the numerous early nineteenthcentury
quintets of Anton Reicha and Franz Danzi indicate that wind chamber
music was indeed a well -e stabli shed genre at the onset of the
romantic period. Miroslav Hosek's comprehensive bibliography of
woodwind quintets ably demonstrates the continuation of a large
body of such works written in the nineteenth century. But, since
it is limited to the quintet alone, it does not bring to light
other chamber works for winds from that period.
The following list resulted from a romantic chamber music study project which began with a survey of the Hosek bibliographies. The list, which excludes woodwind quintets, was drawn mainly from Hosek's Oboen Bibliographie and Wilkins' Oboe Index, as well as from a variety of publishers' catalogues.[2] It includes works with performing forces ranging from duets through chamber music of ten or more performers including at least one oboist. The initial findings were startling - a wide body of seldom-heard, rarely-performed nineteenth-century chamber music exists.
The almost two hundred entries which comprise this compilation include works by composers who lived in the nineteenth century and who embodied some feeling of romantic outlook whether by serving as precursors to composers now viewed as true romanticists, by writing within the time and style confines of the nineteenth century itself, or by carrying on or expanding the musical ideas of the nineteenth century and its many schools into the early twentieth century. Thus, some works are included which fall outside the 1800 to 1900 time frame implied by the title. For example, Beethoven's wind chamber music listed dates from the 1790s. Although this epoch is labeled as his so-called classic period, these works are considered "pre-romantic", and he revised many of them in the 1820s when he had reached his peak of full romantic maturity.
The nature
of the repertoire...
The general nature of the
repertoire discovered was that of mixtures of winds and strings
with some keyboard support. The few duets listed here are probably
diadactic pieces. There are numerous trios for winds alone, for
winds with strings, for winds and piano, and for oboe and a string
instrument with piano. Quartets featuring oboe with string accompaniment
are plentiful, carrying on the eighteenth -century tradition,
but these are outnumbered by quartets of mixed winds in varied
combinations. Quintets other than the traditional wind quintet
are mixtures of winds and strings, some using keyboard. Sextets,
septets, octets, nonets, or works for ten or more instruments
are generally scored for a combination of winds, strings, piano
or harpsichord, and voice.
While well-known nineteenth-century composers such as Gounod, Hummel, Bellini, Massenet, Dvorák, Enescu, and Fauré are represented, many of the works found here are by lesser-known composers. As one might expect from the representation of operatic or nationalistic composers, many of the chamber works listed are of the theme and variation type based on either familiar opera arias or folk tunes. Larger works, that is, septets, octets, and nonets, reflect formal influences of the evolving romantic symphony.
The titles of some works also provide cvidence of romantic thought. Many character pieces, such as nocturnes, songs without words, elegies, and serenades, are present. Typical nineteenth -century programmatic titles are also widespread, as in Gabriel-Marie's Feuilles au Vent, or Sebastian Mayr's Oberländers Sehnsucht.
Interestingly enough, the occurrence of texted chamber works is more wide-spread than one might anticipate. The use of poetry as a programmatic basis for the score or as a text within the composition is not unique only to Charles Martin Loeffler's Deux Rhapsodies for oboe, viola, and piano, based on Rollinat's poems. Other pieces for the same combination with an extra-musical orientation are August Klughardt's texted Schilflieder (Five Fantasy Pieces on a Poem by Lenau), and Josef Holbrooke's Fairyland, based on an Edgar Allan Poe poem.
The use of voice in larger instrumental forms of the late 19th century is an influence also present in chamber music. Hans Koesler's Kammergesäng is a septet for oboe, horn, two violins, viola, 'cello, and voice.

The checklist is arranged in two parts. In the first part, the
entries are listed alphabetically by composer and title, with
each entry numbered serially. Each entry, as data is available,
contains the composer's dates, the title of the work, the publisher,
and the instrumentation. The second part, arranged according to
the size of the ensemble and instrumentation, gives a numerical
cross index of works in the various categories.
The nature of this checklist, like that of any bibliography, demands that it remain an ongoing project. Additions and corrections are welcomed and will be shared with I.D.R.S. members in future issues of this journal.
