Baroque Music for Oboe -- A Discography

by Daniel Stolper with Virginia K. Lowrey

There is a great deal of interest in baroque oboe music for at least two reasons: first, there is so much of it, and second most of it is immensely satisfying for both performer and listener. Approaches to the performance of baroque music have changed tremendously over the past twenty or so years, as reflected in these recorded performances, in line with extensive musicological researches into this period. Antique oboes have been restored to good playing condition and makers of replicas have found ready markets. for their instruments. Michel Piguet and Jurg Schaeftlein, to name only two, have shown potentialities of the baroque instruments undreamed of only a few years ago.

The present-day performer of baroque oboe music faces some dilemmas - should he play his modern instrument or try to find a good replica of a "baroque" instrument? Should this music be approached with the same ideals of tone, phrase shape, and generally high intensity levels we associate with orchestral playing (in a Brahms symphony for example)? Since most of us are trained as - orchestral players, this tradition is not easy to deny, or even put aside temporarily. The question of ornamentation is a prickly one too. The beautiful performances of Tabuteau and Goossens of the Handel G Minor Concerto seem pristine in their unadorned simplicity; Tottcher's recorded performance goes to the other pole, in which the music would almost be overwhelmed by the incredibly complicated embellishments were it not for the basic strength and nobility of the work. To my taste, the performances of Heinz Holliger explore a refreshing middle route through this question of ornamentation; they invariably give an impression of spontaneity and delight the listener with unexpected rhythmic and coloristic variation (for example, the last movements of the Handel C Minor and C Minor Sonatas). Holliger's colleagues are masters of continuo playing and echo his stylish ornaments. In this same vein, the continuo player on Harold Gomberg's beautiful recording of the Telemann D Minor Concerto adds much to the atmosphere of this performance particularly in the first movement. Robert Bloom so aptly describes ornamentation as more than merely adding a trill here or a turn there, but the idea of developing a "new melody;" those who have heard his moving performance of the Handel G Minor Concerto (the third movement in particular) will understand his concept.

Those interested in further comparing ideas of ornamentation will find much to admire in three performances of the CPE Bach Sonata in G Minor, those of Piguet, Holliger, and Evelyn Barbirolli. Here are three personal and distinctive approaches, each satisfying in its own way.

A few words about the following list: the work of the bibliographer is disheartening because it is never finished. Many of the records listed here are now only available in libraries, yet we believe they will repay some searching. If a recorded performance does not appear (and there are many, particularly European, listings we found impossible to trace) this should be construed only as an oversight. We should be eager to supplement this list with significant performances which may have been overlooked. We have limited the scope of the list to solo works only sonatas, concerti, et at There are many splendid recorded performances of baroque orchestral works, and we draw special attention to the Bach cantata series featuring Jurg Schaeftlein and his colleagues, as well as the older Bach Aria Group recordings, with Robert Bloom's magnificent playing. We look forward to listings or reviews of the Brandenburg Concerti and other larger works in which the oboe figures.
