The word "Continuo" refers to the keyboard instrument (organ, harpsichord, cembalo which must realize the figured or unfigured bass (except in the rare cases in which a realized bass is inappropriate) and the reinforcing bass instrument (Violoncello, bassoon, bass violin).
In the arias which employ only solo instruments and continuo, a single reinforcing instrument is suitable whereas in the case of the use of a string section, several bass instruments may be used.
