The Bloomington Campus of Indiana University will be the site of the 23rd Annual Conference of the International Double Reed Society. The campus is one of the most beautiful in the United States and is internationally renowned for its music school. Located in the center of an appealing traditional midwestern town, IU successfully blends the splendor of its history with a vigorous, enlightened plan for the future.

The Conference Program

The Conference will begin with an opening recital at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9 and will close after the final concert on Saturday evening, August 13.

An exciting program is being planned for the conference, including concerts and recitals by professional performers and teachers from around the world. Works to be performed include much of the standard solo and chamber music repertoire of the double reed instruments, as well as new and rediscovered works.

As of this writing, performers and presenters who are scheduled to appear include: Linda Harwell, principal bassoonist of the National Symphony Orchestra; French oboist Francois LeLeux; Don Baker, prominent oboist of the Detroit Symphony; Italian bassoonist Stefano Canuti; oboist Liviu Varcol of Frankfurt, Germany; Leonard Sharrow, former principal bassoonist of the NBC, Chicago and Pittsburgh Symphonies; oboist Sara Lambert Bloom of the Cincinnati Conservatory; French oboists Stephane Part and Jean-Christophe Gayot; bassoonist Kim Walker from Switzerland; Brazilian bassoonist Benjamin Coelho; Brian Green, principal oboist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra; Alex Kline, oboist from Seattle, Washington; bassoonist Christian Davidson of Sweden; bassoonist William Ludwig of Louisiana State University; contrabassoonists Greg Hennegar of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Susan Nigro of Chicago and Roger Soren of the Louisville Orchestra; oboe d'amore artist Jennifer Paull of Switzerland; oboist Henry Schumann of New York; English hornist Pat McFarland of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; bassoonist Jeff Keesecker of Florida State University; and many other outstanding artists presenting solo works and chamber music for the double reed instruments.


There will also be lecture and workshops on many aspects of the performance and pedagogy of double reed instruments, including presentations on the reed-making techniques of Louis Skinner and on oboe repair and maintenance. Other events include the final round of the Gillet Competition and a performance by the winner, and of course, the Conference will conclude with the traditional performance of the Handel Royal Fireworks Music.


Exhibits

Exhibits by representatives of the music industry will be open to I.D.R.S. participants. Displays of instruments, reed equipment, accessories and music will be located in the MAC basement.


Accommodations

A block of residence hall rooms has been reserved at Read Center, which is located across the street from the main meeting site - the Musical Arts Center. Also, a limited number of hotel rooms have been reserved in the Indiana Memorial Union Hotel (IMU). This hotel is a ten minute walk from the Musical Arts Center. Accommodations are also available in the Comfort Inn, and in other area hotels and motels.
