Gerald Corey - Principal, Baltimore Symphony. 3/1971. Three performances of Mozart Concerto K. 191, Rainer Miedel conducting the Baltimore Symphony. (4 new cadenzas by the soloist)

Bernard Garfield - Principal, Philadelphia Orchestra. 12/ 1970. Vivaldi D Minor Concerto and Wolf-Ferrari Suite-Concertante, William Smith conducting the Amerita String Orchestra of Philadelphia. ("Great experience for bassoonists " - Sol Schoenbach.)

David Green - Boston University . I /1971. Doctoral recital including works of Telemann, Hindemith, Halsey Stevens, and Sonata in F Major by William Yeates Hurlstone (1876-1906). Hurlstone was a pianist-composer at the Royal College, London; wrote several chamber pieces for woodwinds.

John Miller - Principal, Boston Philharmonia. 5/1971. Two performances of Hummel's Grand Concerto, with Boston Philharmonia conducted by Leon Kirchner. (A "farewell" solo appearance for John, who helped found the player managed orchestra, as he leaves to become Principal in the Minnesota Symphony this season.)

Maurice Pachman - New York City. 3/1971. Anton Reicha "Grand Quintet" (1824), unpublished, for Bassoon and string quartet. With the Hofstra Quartet.

June Partch - Principal, Albany (NY) Symphony. 3/1971. Mozart Concerto K. 191, Albany Symphony conducted by Julius Hegyi. (fine review)

Kenneth Pasmanick - Principal, Washington National Symphony. 5/20/71. World Premiere of "The Windhover", a Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra, by Robert Evett. Inter-American Festival, Jose Serebrier conducting members of National Symphony. (Very well received by both leading critics in Washington. The work is based on the poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins; according to Mr. Pasmanick the poem is "lovely, with soaring rhythms reflected in the concerto.")

Sherman Walt - Principal, Boston Symphony. 3 and 4/ 1971. Seven performances of Mozart Concerto K. 191, with the Boston Symphony conducted by Michael Tilson-Thomas. Places: Boston; Huppertal and Hanover, Germany; Rome, Italy; and Barcelona, Spain. ("warmly received")

Barbara Wood (Bassoon Faculty) and James Mendenhall - Univ. of Missouri, Columbia. 2/1971. "Concerto per Due Fagotti Concertate" by Hein. Phil. Johnson (c. 1751). Johnson was a founder of the Swedish Royal Academy. Mendenhall, doing graduate work, edited the concerto from manuscript.

Univ. of Florida: Music for Bassoons - yearly program directed by John Kitts (Dept. of Music, Univ. of Fla., Gainesville, Fla. 32601). From 1969 and 1970 programs: John Kitts, "The Man in the Moon" - songs to poetry of J.R.R. Tolkien - for soprano, piano, harp, 3 bassoons, contra and piccolo. Original works for bassoon quartet by Charles Sorrentino and Christopher Weait and some arrangements (Kitts). One, a Kuhnau Gagliarda, is scored for 14 bassoons and 2 contra-bassoons (!)

Univ. of Iowa Bassoon Ensemble - yearly concerts, directed by Ronald Tyree (Music Dept. Univ. of Iowa, Iowa City, IA.) The group commissions one new work yearly for bassoon ensemble: 1970, Ronald LoPresti, "Suite" for 6 Bassoons. 1971, Charles Lisle, "Scherzo" for 6 Bassoons.
