BASSOON IN THE NEWS DEPARTMENT


New York Times . . . September 21, 1973. On the recent trip by the Philadelphia Orchestra to China, several members experienced relief of medical problems via acupuncture, with the aid of Dr. Chang Shu-wen, a Chinese physician. "Adelchi Angelucci, the bassoon player . . . suffered from stiffness in his right thumb. That, he said, is an ailment common to bassoon players, who have to make wide stretches. Dr. Chang treated him with two needles. "Unbelievable! " said Mr. Angelucci. "I'm not joking. What is it? Whatever it is, it works."
