Yale University Eli Carmen Music Memorial Fund

The following information has been received from the Music Library of Yale University:

"The Music Library would be pleased, indeed, to assist in the development of a collection of bassoon music as a memorial to Eli Carmen." We can accept both money and materials, as follows:

(1) Gifts of money should be sent to me (checks must be made payable to Yale University Library). We will start a special "gift account" for these cash contributions and when . . . the campaign (is) finished, we'll either use the money for purchasing bassoon materials or establish an endowment fund for such purchases. A fund of $5000 is normally required to establish an endowment.

(2) Gifts of music and recordings should also be sent to me. We will add to the collection all such material that is in good condition and does not duplicate what we already have (though we often do add extra copies of significant works). Each item we add will be plated "Gift in memorial to Eli Carmen." If an endowment fund is eventually established we'll have a special bookplate printed: "The Eli Carmen Memorial Fund."

I will write a letter of acknowledgment to each donor. Gifts of money are directly tax deductible, gifts of materials must be evaluated by a knowledgeable, outside person (the Internal Revenue Service does not allow the recipient, in this case the Music Library, to make this evaluation). A gift of materials must thus be of some value to warrant an evaluation fee.

We at the Library are ready to receive these gifts. (March 18, 1974 letter to Donald MacCourt)

Sincerely yours,
(signed) Harold E. Samuel,
Music Librarian
