Florian Mueller (Prof. of oboe, Univ. of Michigan) and Linda Smith (Prof. of bassoon, Univ. of Massachusetts at Amherst) have written and published A Method for Bassoon. (University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, Michigan. $3.00 or Eble Music Co., Iowa City, IA 52240). This is a beginners' book with interesting exercises, melodies, duets, etc., useful for instrumental teaching classes in music education at the university level.
V. Neukirchner (1805 - ?)--Rudas. 23 Bassoon Studies (Intermediate) (Edito Musica Budapest. Budapest IV, Paulay Ede u. 55, Hungary) kindly sent me by Otto Oromszegi, along with several chamber works and the following solos:
Ronald J. Klimko (Prof. of bassoon, University of Idaho) has compiled and edited an excellent statistical survey titled Bassoon Performance Practices and Teaching in the United States and Canada (1974). I highly recommend this collection to all bassoon teachers and serious performers. ($6.00 U.S. per copy, from University of Idaho, School of Music, Moscow, ID 83843)
Rodney K. Winther -- Quartet No. 1 for four bassoons. In a jazz style; the composer says, ". . . an opportunity rarely presented to the average bassoonist - the chance to be a saxophone. Now granted, that is a dubious distinction . . . but we did have fun with it and I hope you do too." (From the composer - $4.00. Rodney K. Winther, S.E. 740 High Street Pullman, WA 99163).
Sluka -- Sonata for bassoon and piano (contemporary). A required piece for the Prague bassoon competition last year. (Artia Edition - Supraphone, Prague. Available through Boosey and Hawkes)
