Walter Hermann Sallagar, writes from Vienna, Austria, about his annual wind instrument courses. In 1976, the courses run

• July 4-18 (reed and staple making for double reed instruments instrumental classes for early woodwinds);
• July 18-August 1 (Basic techniques of woodwind instrument making -- advanced ensemble playing -- classical music program);
• August 29-September 12 (Classical and modern wind chamber music -- early woodwind instrument making and restoration).

Teachers for the courses include:

• Walter Hermann Sallagar and David Skulski (reed making--emphasis on older instruments),
• Sven Berger, Herr Sallagar and Mr. Skulski, Anne-Marie Thiel (playing of historic wind instruments);
• John F. Hanchet - of London College of Furniture -- (techniques of woodwind instrument making); and
• Roy E. Wiggins - Thurrock Technical College, England--(manufacture and repair of brass and metal work fitted to historic wind instruments).

Herr Sallagar also invites all interested bassoon students to the winter class he directs at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory of Music in Eisenstadt (50 km away from Vienna), where he teaches bassoon playing, reed making, bassoon history, and ensemble performance. French Bassoon society memberships. "Les Amis du Basson Francais" invites all those interested in the history and future of the French system bassoon to join its ranks. There is a very informative newsletter (in French), similar to this publication and printed about twice annually. The society is interested in all news about activities including performances on French bassoons, discussion of the history of all bassoons, differences in reeds, tonal concepts, etc. Subscription costs are: 5 French francs (students); 20 FF (non-professionals); and 50 FF (professionals).
