A POEM TO MAKE REEDS BY

by Paul Tucci, Principal Bassoon, Houston Symphony

I thought TTWB readers might be amused and interested in the included Calligraphy of my poem, "Metamorphosis" on reed making. It was written by me several years ago--piece meal--and I recently decided to get it all together and printed calligraphically on parchment.

Although the rhymes are amusing they are also informative and actually helpful in finding out what makes a reed work. The stanza, "with a file you take heed, at the sides of the reed," is a little misleading. It refers to the sides of the blade area as opposed to the center, and does not mean the side edges of the blades along the shape.

If anyone is interested in a copy (in color), just as the one I've given you, they can write me at my home address. The cost is $3.25 plus postage. (Recommended: send a postal money order in US. funds in the amount of $3.75. Editor.)
