A J. Meacham Bassoon

Richard Lottridge, bassoon professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin (and formerly contra bassoonist of the Chicago Symphony), arrived at the Toronto IDRS Annual Meeting this August with a lovely 'find,' a completely preserved bassoon by J. Meacham, made in Hartford, Connecticut (USA) in the period before he moved to Albany, New York (ca. 1808). Complete with the original crook, and nicely brought up to air-tight playing standard, the instrument responded very well to a modern Neuranter reed built for the Buffet bassoon. The editor found the full compass of this bassoon to be clear and free of "awful" sounding notes; the tone is warm and quite big for an instrument which has smaller than average tone holes. The instrument was located at an antique shop in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where it had evidently been standing in a corner for some years. We are pleased that it is in such welcome and good bassoonist's hands at last.
