INTERESTING PERFORMANCES

CINCINNATI WOODWIND QUINTET -- George Hambrecht, flute; Dennis Larson, oboe; Richard Waller, clarinet; Michael Hatfield, horn; and Otto Eifert, bassoon.
3/76. College Conservatory of Music, Cincinnati, Ohio. A very fine and unusual wind quintet program including: Romance by Max Reger, the now-published and delightful Six Bagatelles of György Ligeti (Schott. Mainz), an arrangement of a Gavotte with Six Doubles by Jean-Philippe Rameau, and a quintet of Emanuel Aloys Förster (1748-1823).
Val Kennedy -- contrabassoonist, London Philharmonic Orchestra.
3/76 (performance) - 6/76 (televised broadcast). Recorded for the BBC two contra solos written for the artist --Ruth Gipps' Leviathan and Ralph Nicholson's Impromptu for contra and orchestra. With the BBC Welsh Orchestra, Vernon Handley conducting. (Mr. Kennedy very kindly translated a few of my early newsletters into German for my German-speaking subscribers. Thanks again.) A further note from Val Kennedy about Paul Hindemith, mentioned in Vol. VI, No. 1, 1976: "(Hindemith) was a great friend of my parents and came to conduct the LPO in 1947: I asked him of course to autograph my copy of his bassoon sonata, and he wrote, "The Amateur to the Professional." He told me that he could play all his sonatas on all the instruments he had written for (wind, I presume) but mentioned that he thought of himself as an amateur. Probably a modest understatement."
Philip Levin -- New York City. Baroque bassoon performance.
1/76. At Carnegie Recital Hall, New York. In a recital with Nora Post, baroque oboe; Edward Brewer, harpsichord; and assisting artists on gamba, bass, baroque violins, and baroque viola. A program including La Noce Champètre by Jean Hotteterre for oboe and B.C., Sonata (Méthodique) for bassoon and B.C. of George Ph. Telemann, Concerto in D Minor for oboe, strings, and B.C. by Alessandro Marcello, Concerto in C Major for bassoon, strings, and B.C. by Antonio Vivaldi, and Telemann's Trio Sonata in G Minor for recorder (played by Philip Levin also), oboe, and B.C. This concert received a very positive review in the New York Times of January 11,1976. Mr. Levin currently uses a Steinkopf copy of a Denner bassoon. However, listed in the program for this concert was this information: "(Mr. Levin's) research has included the design and construction of historic double reeds and double reed instruments, and he is presently undertaking the manufacture of 3-keyed baroque bassoons." We hope to hear further about Mr. Levin's progress.
Harold Robison -- Ohio University College of Fine Arts.
11/75. A faculty recital including Villa-Lobos' Ciranda para Sete Notas, Eric Fogg's (rarely played, but nice) Concerto for Bassoon, Paul Chihara's Branches for 2 bassoons and percussion (Jay Tinkleman, bassoon), and Robert Schollum's Trio fur Flote, Fagott, und Klavier, Op. 45 (1951).
