New librarian for the IDRS is Bruce Degen, professor of bassoon at Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa. He shares with me the thought that the IDRS Library is potentially one of the most valuable aspects of IDRS membership, and refers us to the statements put forth by Lawrence Intravaia in his article in the 1973 Journal. We are eager to see the library grow - particularly in the direction of a collection of unpublished music, not easily available through the usual commercial channels; and to gather rather specialized categories of music such as trios, quartets, and larger ensembles of double-reed music. Of course, copies of dissertations and other scholarly works are welcome, together with discs and tapes of significant performances.
We are fortunate in having a scholar (DMA from the Eastman School) and performer (principal bassoon, the Des Moines Symphony) in this position. Please communicate your thoughts and suggestions to him. Your contributions to the IDRS Library will make it a viable entity. Write to Dr. Degen at the Division of Fine Arts, Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa 50125.
