For the following three-part article I am grateful to Misters Bernard Garfield, Otto Eifert, and Matthew Ruggiero for their kind assistance. The purpose of this article is to describe in detail the procedures for the recent auditions in the Philadelphia and Cincinnati Orchestras as an assistance to those young bassoonists preparing for that next "big" audition. The final article by Mr. Ruggiero describes his successful audition for the Boston Symphony in 1961. It first appeared in the March/April 1981 issue of the BSO: Boston Symphony's Bi-Monthly Newsletter, and is reprinted here with the kind permission of the author. It provides an inspirational look at the audition procedures from the players point of view. Ed.
