A DISCOGRAPHY OF OBOE MUSIC
James Prodan

We all know, understand, and try to instill in our students the need to be intelligent and informed music listeners, as well as performers. In general, listening is an aid to learning tone color concepts, national styles, period styles and ornamentation. More specifically, the study of one work performed by several different players gives insight into the interpretation of dynamics, tempos, articulations, tone color changes, and even mistakes in the printed music.

This discography grew out of assignments such as: "Go listen to it; then we will discuss it." We have attempted to be as comprehensive as possible, including in the list solo oboe, oboe and accompaniment, concerti, oboe and English horn trios, and oboe quartets. Other chamber music is listed at our discretion.

The discography is arranged in two alphabetical lists, one by composer and one by performer. Each listing includes recording company and record number. The availability of some listings is uncertain. The authors of the discography would appreciate your comments, as well as any additional listings.
