Clarinet in C and horn crooked in F are specified for this work. An alternate part for clarinet in Bb has been supplied by the present editor.

First Movement

The initial movement proceeds in sonata form. As in the three sonata-form movements of Quintet No. 2, Cambini produces yet another most unorthodox structure. To be sure the three main parts (exposition, development, and recapitulation) are present; but the recapitulation is extremely free: one waits in vain for the return of Themes 2 and 3. Note that in the recapitulation during Theme 4, the oboe ascends in concerto fashion up to high F3, and terminates this same thematic material with a cadential trill.

Theme 1b in I: horn solo
Theme 1k1 in I
Transition to V
Theme 2a in V: imitation
Theme 2b: V to V of V
Theme 3 in V: clarinet solo
Themes 3k1 (chromatic) and 3k2 (scalar) in V

Development
Fragment of Theme 1a in vi
Transition: vi to I

Recapitulation
Theme 1a in I: unison
Theme 1b in I: horn solo
Theme 1c: IV to V: bassoon solo
Theme 1k2 in V
Theme 4 in I: oboe solo
Theme 4k in I
Themes 3k1 (chromatic), 3k3 (clarinet arpeggiation) and 3k2 (scalar) in I

Second Movement

Set in the relative minor, the slow movement proceeds in sonata form with very intricate subdivision of the eighth-note tactus. The structure is straightforward and very well thought out. Theme 1 is omitted from the recapitulation, but it gets a thorough workout in the development section. Theme 2 (originally in III) undergoes modification in the recapitulation to make it sound in the tonic minor.

Exposition
Theme 1 in i: oboe/clarinet/flute
Transition: V of III
Theme 2 in III: bassoon/horn
Themes 2k1, 2k2, and 2k3 in III

Development
Fragments of Themes 1 and 2 : modulatory: iv through V

Recapitulation
Theme 2 (modified) in i: bassoon/horn
Themes 2k1, 2k4, 2k2, and 2k3 in i

Third Movement

The finale of Cambini’s Quintet No. 3 is a rondo, not unlike the one concluding Quintet No. 1. Here, one finds two couplets surrounded by three repetitions of the refrain. Although all the instruments get a terriffic workout, this movement is a real showcase for the hand horn.

Refrain AABC k: horn & bassoon / tutti

Refrain A: horn & bassoon
2nd Couplet
