Topic: Getting started in bassoon repair
I have been interested, for some time now, in getting into bassoon repair. I have purchased an old bassoon to use as my first guinea pig and need some advice on where and how to start. I have a pretty good shop at my disposal with the West Point Band and an excellent technician that will show me the basics of adjusting keys, applying corks and felts and repadding the instrument. I am also interested in doing more such as refinishing the body, inserting water tubes and replacing keys. I am ready to jump in with both feet! How would you recommend that I start? Are there books available to help? How do people normally get started in this sort of endeavor? Who sells some of the supplies and replacement parts that will be needed? I am very mechanically inclined and have a woodworking background so I'm not afraid to try (although maybe I should be!). Thanks for your help!
