Topic: Heckelphone reed making

I'm cross posting this in the oboe reed room.

I've been comissioned to help make a heckelphone reed for an oboe player.  I'm a bassoon player, so between the two of us we should be able to work out someting, but I need a place to start.  Is there a good basic reference on heckelphone reeds (IDRS site or otherwise)?  I of course know how to form a bassoon reed, and have some old bassoon reeds that I could retrofit if that's possible.  I'm mostly concerned with dimensions and what kind of scrape to use.  Are heckelphone reeds usually more oboe/english horn reed like or more bassoon reed like in terms of scrape.

Any information would be really helpful.

Hey, Trent

I just saw this posting. I know it's a year old, but how did you ever make out with making Heckelphone reeds?

I can help if you still need it.

Re: Heckelphone reed making

Thanks for your message.  I ended up not helping on the project.  The oboe player in question managed to retrofit a bassoon reed or something.  He sounded quite good (considering) on the one piece on the recital.

It was a recital including all the members of the oboe family, including heckelphone and bass oboe.  There was also no piano at the recital, so it was very ... different.
