Topic: New Commission project
I would like to let all of you know of a new commissioning project for 2014 with internationally-recognized composer, Jim Stephenson (www.stephensonmusic.com). I am spearheading the project to have Jim create two new major works for bassoon, and I personally believe the project to be quite significant, while also inexpensive.
Jim has already composed his new bassoon concerto: "Dialogue of Self and Soul". This new concerto (using orchestral winds) will receive its premiere with Norbert Nielubowski, and will subsequently get performed by Tim McGovern (Illinois) and nine other bassoon faculty at major universities: Florida State, Penn State, Michigan, UT-Austin, Ohio State, UMass Amherst, Eastern, Michigan and Wisconsin.
Jim plans to do a piano reduction of this work, which is 20 minutes in length. Additionally, he will compose a new sonata for bassoon and piano. This represents two major additions to our repertoire.
More about the project:
Commissioners would be recognized in both scores for their contribution.
The fee to join this project is just $50 per commissioner. All participants would be listed on the title page as contributors with their affiliation, and would also receive the score and parts, of course.
Jim would plan to have the concerto reduction done by June 1, and the sonata by October 1.
Because of the numbers of participants involved, there cannot be any "premiere rights" reserved, except to anyone willing to pay for such. This can be negotiated separately with Jim at ComposerJim@gmail.com.
The deadline for commitment is March 1. Payment would be collected (for both) by April 1.
A little about Jim (take note of the names for whom he has written!):
Having been a professional performer himself (almost 20 years in the Naples Philharmonic) Jim is especially in demand for concertos and other solo works. His two violin concertos were recently premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra (Jennifer Frautschi, violin) and Rhode Island Philharmonic (Alex Kerr, violin) respectively, and he was just commissioned by the Dallas Symphony to write his third trumpet concerto. He has written an oboe concerto for Alex Klein (and the US "President's Own" Marine Band) and a clarinet concerto, performed by Dan Gilbert, John Yeh and David Shifrin. Other commissioning/premiering soloists include Branford Marsalis, Nitzan Haroz (principal trombone - LA Phil), Gail Williams (horn concerto), Jeffrey Work (principal trumpet/Oregon Symphony) and several more. His trumpet concerto #2 for Rex Richardson has been performed on five continents.
His recent "Devil's Tale" (sequel to L'histoire) will receive its Ravinia debut this summer.

Thank you so much. You may send questions to me, but it might be easiest to go directly to Jim himself (ComposerJim@gmail.com). He is very open to speaking with people. He actually rather likes it!
