Topic: Pre-gouging Tricks
Does anyone have any tips and tricks for pregouging cane? I have used all manner of pregougers-- at university we had a mechanical one which broke constantly. I'm currently using a push-though model as I can't afford a mechanical one (and am not convinced that a mechanical one is the solution). I've also done it by hand, but that seems like the best way to cut oneself. I consistently find this chore the most loathsome part of making reeds, and I was hoping that someone out there has a better way. I would forgo the process completely, but split cane doesn't fit very well in to my gouging machine.
