Topic: Allergic to Nickel

My friend is allergic to nickel and her bassoon has nickel plated keys. Are there any latex-free (she's allergic to that too) solutions that could help?

Re: Allergic to Nickel

Your friend could lacquer the keys. Experiment using nail varnish - this probably won't last long but can easily be replaced or removed.

Re: Allergic to Nickel

If your friend is a professional musician and plans to play her current bassoon for any length of time, a long term, albeit expensive, solution would be to have her keys replated in either silver or gold. Otherwise, Ian's solution is probably best.

Is there any chance that your friend is ready for a bassoon upgrade?

If so, she should shop for a bassoon with silver- or gold-plated keys. If she were to order the bassoon, she could order it with the plating of her choice. Silver is a good choice, but gold might be an especially felicitous choice for someone with allergy issues.
