Topic: High Note Bassoon Fingerings

Here is a message by Tim DeWitt posted 23 June 2005:

I wasn't too sure where to put this, as it deals more with fingerings than reeds per se.

I'm planning on doing the Gillet Competition this year, and I have been having some problems with the tongued Eb's (in the Nussio) and the E at the end of the Tansman.  I know a few alternate fingerings, but they aren't as consistent as I'd like.  Just curious if anyone has alternate fingerings or reed tips to help out with the problem.

The fingerings I know are:

Eb

     x <-Small H.H.
     x
Db x

E
     x <- Small H.H.
     x
Db x

     x
     x
     x

Re: High Note Bassoon Fingerings

Although I didn't end up submitting a tape for the Gillet, I did perform the Tansman.  The fingering I ended up using for the high E, through total trial and error was:

          o  E key
          X
D C#  X
--------------
    Bb   o  C# key
           X
           o

I have since switched the bocal that I use, and this fingering doesn't work on the new bocal.

A fingering that works well for high Eb that I've found is:

          o
D C# X
          X  Top resonator key
-------------
          o
          X
(either the back F# or Bb key, depending on which works better for your set up)
