Topic: d'Amore tube problems

I am playing the oboe d'Amore for the first time, and I'm having trouble with reeds (surprise surprise!).  Actually, my problem is more with the tube fitting on the bocal -- or not fitting, actually.  Apparently the tubes I have are out of round and won't form an airtight seal around the bocals.  Right now I'm just wrapping cigarette paper around the tip of the bocal and putting the tube on that, and that seems to work okay but it's a little bit of a pain.  I was wondering if anyone had similar experiences or any suggestions about a less complicated fix?

Re: d'Amore tube problems

The standard "fix" for the whole staple-bocal problem is to stick a little piece of flexible rubber tubing (the kind sold at aquarium stores works great) onto the end of the staple, with enough hanging off the end so it "hugs" the bocal when you put the reed on it.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!  It worked.  I had seen this done on other players' EH reeds, but I've never had to use it for mine so it just didn't occur to me.  It fixes the problem!
