Boston, Massachusetts -- Jun 6, 2008 -- Toby Oft has been named the new principal trombone of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the 2008-09 season. His tenure will begin on September 24, 2008, which will be the all-Russian-themed opening night for the BSO's season.
Oft comes to the Boston Symphony Orchestra from the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, where he served as principal trombone. He has performed with the San Diego Opera and has also held principal positions with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Florida West Coast Symphony, as well with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Born in Portland, OR, Oft started to play trombone at the age of six with his father Michael, then went on to study with Warren Baaker, Jeff Uusitalo, and Peter Ellefson in high school, before going on to earn his bachelor's degree from Indiana University and his master's degree from Northwestern University.
