Topic: Cedar Rapids Symphony Accepting Donations for Flood Relief
Cedar Rapids Symphony
The symphony has temporarily set up offices at the Grant Wood House, 800 Second Ave. SE, next to 5 Turner Alley. Symphony School classes will continue at Zion Lutheran Church, 201 First Ave., Hiawatha. To contact the Symphony School, call (319) 363-3960.
Water rose to around 8 feet above the Symphony Center's main level, 119 Third Ave. SE, adjacent to the Paramount Theatre in downtown Cedar Rapids. The Steinway piano in the main floor recital hall was removed and taken to a safe storage area. Other instruments stored in the Paramount were moved to higher levels within the theater, as well as over to the third floor of the Symphony Center.
The majority of the destruction was to administrative office equipment and the building itself. Disaster relief crews are clearing debris before a contractor is hired to assess damage and rebuild.
The orchestra will continue to perform for the 2008-09 season and is seeking performance venues. Beginning Monday, the ticket office will resume regular summer office hours, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, at the Grant Wood House location. The Symphony's phone service is being re-established and will be available again this week at (319) 366-8206. Tickets also can be ordered online soon at www.crsymphony.org
Volunteers are not needed, but donations are. Mail to the Cedar Rapids Symphony, Attn: Flood Relief, 119 Third Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401.
