Topic: Personna razor blades?

Hi there, I am looking for a way to purchase Personna razor blades for oboe cane shaping... I can't seem to find them, even online!  Thanks in advance for your help!

These blades are made by American Safety Razor Company. You can ask them where to buy it.

A quick search on google found this: http://www.toolbarn.com/product/personna/61-0034/

ASRC also make GEM razor blades which are really incredibly sharp. There are so many different styles of GEMs, but I won't get into here. It's hard to figure out. You can buy the 100-pack of GEM razor blades from here:

RDG: http://www.rdgwoodwinds.com/product_info.php?products_id=229
SPI: http://www.2spi.com/catalog/tools/smtol14.shtml ($50 minimum order)
44tools: http://www.44tools.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=B122SG (cheaper)

I found the GEM Personna (much sharper than above, but more expensive and sold in only 10-packs) here:

Re: Personna razor blades?

Thanks for the link, John.  I know bassoonists don't use razor blades the same way oboists do.  I use them to make a collar and to score.  Are the GEM blades really that much better than the others?  Are they sharper and do they last longer?  Thanks, Kent

Re: Personna razor blades?

Kent,

Yes to all three. I started out with Stanley from Home Depot. They were ok. Then I went to Personna. A little bit better. But with Gem, you can clip incredibly small slivers from reed tips. Bonus is that they resharpen extremely well; I use an Eze-Lap extra fine "stone" & then fine tune with a translucent Arky. Then they are eminently fine for shaping cane. For bassoon purposes, Persona & Stanley might be good; I clip nearly all my reeds (oboe)

Best.

Re: Personna razor blades?

Thanks John.  That is interesting and good to know.  I may buy some of the GEM.  This website explains how they have a 3 facet edge http://www.tedpella.com/dissect_html/dissect.htm#_121_20_pal  and I also read that the carbon steel also makes a difference.  I think I will try some.  I hate dull blades.  Thanks again for leading me to these.

Thanks to Jim Poe, I use #25 surgical blades for shaping bassoon cane.
