Topic: Whistling flick keys

Hello everyone, I have a few students whose flick keys make a rather annoying whistling sound when vented. I always thought that this was because of an old pad, but the worst offender has a brand new (less than a month!) Renard. The others have crummy school instruments. Is there anything we can do?

Do the vents need to be cleaned?

On the school horns, for sure-- but how can a brand new Renard need cleaning like that?

You never know. Maybe dirt or detritus from the swab is in a vent? It's worth checking.

I've also found that a too-hard reed can sometimes make the bassoon produce odd sounds, possibly including whistling flick keys.

Are the problems with all the flick keys, or just one of them?
