Re: Passings of Double Reed Musicians.....

Canadian oboist Bernard Jean has died.  Several people have posted about his passing on IDRS fb.

Here is his bio:

From the facebook page of Sonia Gratton

It is with great sadness that I am learning this morning the death of Bernard Jean, my first teacher at the conservatory. He called me my owl but yelled at me after I beat a beat. When I played well he said with his sound laugh " we record!" or " good! We can start the strauss "! he was like a father to me in years when I was fragile and I made him see all the colors! His exceptional talent, his smooth game, his badass side, his sense of humour and his attentive and reassuring presence in the room during the concerts will be engraved in me forever. The more I get older, the more I realize the influence he has on me-the singing and natural game, that's all he-and I am very grateful to him.
He burned the candle at both ends, but he threw sparks on many of us by the way.
My sympathies to his wife Joanne and all her former students and colleagues. There will be no funeral service.
Thank you Bernard, I love you xx

Jon Dlouhy, who played Principal Oboe in the Atlanta Symphony from (I think) 1979-2006, died suddenly less than a week ago in Decatur, Georgia.  Condolences to his family and friends.
He's on the left, with his sister Susan, in this image:

Denisa Bílá (Bila), who was a member of the Oboists of the World facebook group, was tragically killed on September 15.  There is a sentence in English about it at this link.  I  found  an article in Czech, and I believe she was walking across a street  and hit by a car (according to the google translation.) Condolences to her family and friends.  Denisa played in the Ostrava Philharmonic in Czechia (Czech Republic.)

Re: Passings of Double Reed Musicians.....

From Chip Hamann, Principal Oboe Nat'l Arts Centre Orch
Today the oboe world lost one of the great singing artists of the late 20th Century, Rowland Floyd. Rowland was the principal oboist of the National Arts Centre Orchestra for its first 25 years and my distinguished predecessor. He was also Marcel Tabuteau's last student. Conductors built programs, recordings and tours around his incredible tone and stunning musicality. There will certainly be more tributes in the weeks and months to come. Here he is pictured in the spiffy red jacket at left at the 40th anniversary celebration of NACO in 2009. He was always dressed to the nines. RIP, Rowland.

Roland is wearing the red jacket.

Re: Passings of Double Reed Musicians.....

Sergio Mannu writes in English about the sudden death of Michele Mancaniello founder of "Oboe in the World" fb page.
A terrible news I would have never given: on December 28th 2017, Professor Michele Mancaniello founder and soul of "Oboe in the World" has suddenly died at the age of 52 years. There are no words to describe the pain, the surprise and the sadness for such an event: Michele was a guy dear to all of us for his generosity, his limpid talent of musician, his sensitivity of oboist, his didactic capabilities. It's our task to keep on the Group's life, to honor in the best way his dear memory: we address to him our prayer and our most moved memory, together with the condolences presented to his familiars by all the big family of "Oboe in the World" . Good bye, dear Michele: we love you!
